Success Story: Alora

We are pleased to share a Blue Water Safe Horizons “success story” regarding one of our past service recipients, below. Names and other identifying details have been changed to protect privacy, but the story is based on a true survivor.

“Alora” is an 11-year-old girl who had been raped by a neighbor.

Alora was struggling with severe anxiety and self-esteem problems. She was also acting out toward others. Alora’s family sought individual counseling services for her through Blue Water Safe Horizons, as well as legal advocacy, as Alora had to prepare to confront her rapist in court.

Through counseling, Alora has been able to learn to recognize what triggers her anxiety, and she has learned healthy coping skills. Alora’s family reports that her behavior toward others has substantially improved, and she has been able to return to school and take part in other extracurricular activities.

Through legal advocacy and accompaniment, Alora was also able to testify about her experience in court, and for the first time, she indicated feeling proud of herself.

Alora continues to receive counseling on a weekly basis and is showing amazing growth and healing from the trauma of her past.
