Success Story: Gemma

We are pleased to share a Blue Water Safe Horizons “success story” regarding one of our past service recipients, below. Names and other identifying details have been changed to protect privacy, but the story is based on a true survivor.

“Gemma” and her six children came to the shelter after fleeing her abusive husband.

Gemma did not have many resources available to her at the time she entered the shelter. She had no supports and she did not have any income.

After seeking the safety of Carolyn’s Place shelter, Gemma met with shelter staff who, in turn, referred her to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for assistance with food benefits, medical coverage, and daycare. She was not eligible for cash assistance, but was supplied with employment opportunities.

Gemma also coordinated with Blue Water Safe Horizons’ Legal Advocate to obtain a Personal Protection Order. She attended therapy with a Blue Water Safe Horizons counselor, who also gave her a referral so her children could receive therapy, as well.

Within a short period of time, Gemma secured employment. She also decided to continue her education and was referred to those resources as well.

With the help of the Housing Assessment and Resource Agency (HARA), she was able to secure housing and now continues her education while employed and supporting her family.

We are so proud of Gemma and all she has done to break free from her abusive relationship. She is well on her way to building a fulfilling life her own for herself and her children.
