Get Involved: Volunteer

Volunteer1

At Blue Water Safe Horizons, we follow the State of Michigan’s empowerment model in all services provided to survivors. The empowerment model recognizes that every survivor is the expert of their own life and has the right to make decisions for themselves and their families without pressure, judgment, or control from others. Our role is not to “rescue” or direct survivors, but to provide education, support, advocacy, resources, and options in a safe and respectful environment. We believe healing and long-term safety are strengthened when survivors are treated with dignity, autonomy, compassion, and the ability to make informed choices at their own pace. Volunteers, staff, and board members are expected to uphold these principles in every interaction and to support a survivor-centered approach that promotes safety, respect, and empowerment. We find ir very important that all people who want to volunteer understand this model and agree to adhere to it as well.

There are number of ways members of the community can get involved at Blue Water Safe Horizons.

The most common way people become involved is through volunteer activities. BWSH trains volunteers to help us with numerous tasks and new volunteers are always welcome. They serve in a wide variety of capacities and contribute an awful lot to the success of the agency.
